***IVY***

Ivy’s eyes were getting heavy as she sat with Carter’s arm wrapped around her and listened to the conversation, too exhausted to participate but hating the idea that the night would end. For the last few hours, she had been a normal person sitting with other normal people enjoying a meal and a few laughs. Carter’s kissing lesson had been the highlight of the night, and if she hadn’t been so tired, she would have asked for a practice session.

Trying not to smile when she remembered him calling her his girlfriend, she looked over at him and the smile spread across her face anyway. He looked down at her and smiled back. “You look tired. Maybe we should wrap this up for tonight,” he said. “We shouldn’t have kept you up so late. You’re still getting better.”

“It’s okay. I’ve had a wonderful time tonight,” she said. “It was way better than the few hours of sleep I would have gotten. Besides, I don’t want to run everyone off before they’re ready to leave.”

“Well, you all, this has been great, but I think it’s time we headed home, Annie and the baby need their sleep,” Dominic said, getting to his feet. “This town is going to turn into a mad house tomorrow, I think I’m ready every year, but then something pops up at the last minute.”

“Let’s just hope it doesn’t rain. That storm last night had me up half the night worrying,” Paul said. “This festival gets to be a bigger headache every year.”

“Hey, don’t talk that way. The next two weeks will pay all my bills for the year,” Carter said, getting to his feet. “And with the extra help I have this year, it should be a breeze.”

Ivy smiled up at him. “You may change your mind before this is over,” she said. “I’ve never worked at a place like this before, or anyplace for that matter.”

“As long as you don’t burn the place down, I think we’ll be fine,” he said, putting his arm around her. “Come on, you guys, we’ll walk you out.”

They all turned to go inside when a voice that made her blood run cold rang out over the patio. “Now, isn’t this nice? I’m just sorry I missed dinner,” Sebastian said, stepping out of the trees. “I would have warned you that I was coming, but I didn’t want to spoil the surprise.”

Carter shoved her behind him. “Go in the house, Ivy,” he hissed at her. “Don’t look back. Just go.”

But she was frozen in place watching Sebastian’s men come out of the trees, panic making her heart pound and her breath come in short gasps. One by one, the men slowly moved up to stand next to Carter, the eight of them creating a wall between the threat and the five women. Sebastian looked so sure of himself, she began to shake, her worst nightmare suddenly coming true.

“You know better than to come here like this, Sebastian,” Carter said, surprising the younger man.
